How to Bake a Perfect Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are so versatile. You can top them with just about anything sweet, savory, spicy, or any other way you like them. Some of my favorites are plain with butter and salt, sweet with honey and cinnamon, or topped with my favorite buffalo chicken. You can find my easy 3-ingredient buffalo chicken recipe HERE. You can bake a sweet potato in THREE easy steps.
WASH THE SWEET POTATO
Sweet potatoes are delicious but they are quite a dirty vegetable. They are grown in the ground so it makes sense! You don’t want any dirt or debris in your food so be sure to wash yours with a veggie scrubber. I use this one linked below.
POKE THE POTATO
Sweet potatoes release a hot of steam and get very hot while they cook. To prevent it from burning, use a fork to poke the sweet potato multiple times. I like to think of the potato like a square and poke each side of the “square” 3-4 times.
BAKE THE SWEET POTATO
Place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. If your sweet potatoes vary in size, they may need various baking times. You will know the sweet potato is finished when you can pierce it easily with a knife.
ADDITIONAL TIPS
· I used to spray my sweet potatoes with oil before baking. Before that, I wrapped it with foil. Neither of these are necessary, they bake just fine on their own.
· When purchasing sweet potatoes, try to get the same size to make the baking time more consistent for all of them.
· Since sweet potatoes can release some juice that can be sticky when baking, you can line the baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
· If you need the sweet potatoes done faster, cook them at 425 degrees Fahrenheit but reduce the cooking time by 15 minutes (again, this is dependent on your specific size of sweet potato).
